Okay, maybe you can have too much of a good thing. That seems to be the lesson Game of Thrones may leave us with from their final EMMY night. While the show took home Outstanding Drama, it was far from sweeping the night. And much of that could be attributed to being a victim of its own success.
Peter Dinklage won for Supporting Actor in a Drama. But Supporting Actress went to Ozark’s Julia Garner. She’s great as an actress in general and in her role in particular. But four of the six nominees were from Game of Thrones. There’s a very good chance they split the vote, letting Julia walk away with the prize. Her co-star, Jason Bateman, won for directing a drama series.
But it doesn’t stop there. Billy Porter, who had the most fab hat this side of the Kentucky Derby, has an even better accessory: an EMMY! He won for Actor in a Drama, while Jodie Comer of Killing Eve got Best Actress. All of these winners are incredibly deserving, but you get the feeling that voters had Thrones fatigue.
Fail To The Veep
Voters were also ready to move on from another former fave, Veep, and in the process certify an official new EMMY Darling: Fleabag. The show romped in the comedy categories to the point where Phoebe Waller-Bridge started to repeat her acceptance speeches. The show won best comedy, while she won for Actress and writer.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel picked up everything that Fleabag didn’t get, including a win for Tony Shaloub as Supporting Actor in a Comedy and Alex Borstein or Supporting Actress. Her speech is must see viewing and was the most impactful of the night.
