High & Lo

JLo and Shakira finally did their incredibly hyped Super Bowl Halftime Show. There were sexy outfits. Booty shakin’. Plenty of songs we all know. Booty shakin’. Diva attitude for days. Did I mention there was booty shakin’?

The show was everything I expected, and that’s my problem with the show. Nothing surprised me. There was no OMG moment. There is nothing that will go down as an iconic stunt we’ll be talking about 10 years from now. I don’t think we’ll be talking about this ten hours from now.

Representation is important, and having two strong, talented Latinas rocking one of the biggest opportunities in the world is awesome. But they did what they always do in their shows. It’s cool seeing Shakira show off her guitar and drum skills. Jenny hauled out her pole from Hustlers and worked it good. Hoards of backup dancers spun to and fro across the midfield stage.

But all that was expected. I wanted.. something. Something to make my jaw drop.

Take Your Daughter To Work

The closest thing we got was Jennifer’s daughter, Emme, coming out to sing Born In The USA and Let’s Get Loud. Girl’s got some talent, and it’s great to get a glimpse of the next generation of diva. You just know she’s gonna be besties with Blue Ivy Carter.

But even trotting her out is just an ‘aww cute’ moment, not something that will go down in Super Bowl lore. I was hoping she’d marry A-Rod during the show. Now¬†that would be epic.

As it was, we got a lot of singable songs and good dancing. Exactly what we expected. Nothing more.

The Critic’s Cocktail Recommendation

Dark Rum & Pepsi. Rum because, you know, it’s Miami and it makes everything tropical. Pepsi, cuz the amount of money they spend sponsoring the show, they need to sell every can they can.

Cheers!
