Tiffany Haddish is having a moment. She is currently starring in Nobody’s Fool, the THIRD movie she’s released in just five weeks! First there was Night School, starring opposite to Kevin Hart. Then came The Oath, written, directed, and co-starring Ike Barinholtz. Capping off the trifecta in Nobody’s Fool, she is carrying the movie. We talked with Tiff and Nobody’s Fool director
Madea Tyler Perry.
Pour yourself a good cocktail, cuz things got a little emotional.
When You Gotta Go..
“Did you pee a little bit? That’s my goal.” Tiffany was looking for reviews the moment we sat down. We told her there’s a reason we wear wine-colored pants! When asked if she really wanted our opinion, she upped her game, saying “Everybody has one. Just like a butthole.”
And.. we’re off!
In Nobody’s Fool, Tiff plays Tanya, a wild child who’s getting out of lockup after five years. Tyler says there’s a reason everyone will recognize her, telling us “everybody has a Tanya somewhere in their family. We have like three Tanyas in my family.”
Known for her over-the-top, take-no-prisoners attitude, Tanya is the perfect character to breakout her career. “I didn’t hire Tiffany Haddish for her not to be Tiffany Haddish. I feel like this is her follow-up to Girl’s Trip.”
And what a trip these last few weeks have been.
This is easily her movie, and of the three films released since September, you can tell this one is the most fun for her, channelling her inner-Tanya and getting flirty with her co-star Omari Hardwick.
“Omari’s character to me, he’s just so fine, so sexy. So I’m gonna take this opportunity to hit on him as much as possible.” “He’s married.,” Tyler chimed in, trying to get her hormones under control. “I know. That’s why we acting. This is for pretend. In real life we don’t do that. In real life I respect that. Cuz everybody respect mine when I get one. Alright.”
And her other co-star, Tika Sumpter, who plays her straight-laced sister, wasn’t immune from Tiffany’s on-set antics.
“We was having so much fun. Have you ever been to a slumber party and played like games and stuff? We was doing that. It was like sisters. Okay today we gonna pretend this. I had a blast.”
“It was super fun. Because look, I know both of them are dramatic actors, is what I know them both as. So I felt like oh I’m gonna play off their little drama and I’m gonna make them laugh and I’m gonna make them smile, and I want us to have fun together. And we did that.”
Making the Most of Her Moment
We noticed her work load rivals that of her Night School co-star, Kevin Hart, who releases something like 84 projects a year.
So we asked if she looked at his release schedule and said ‘Hold my drink.’
“Yes! I’ve been planning this for years. Domination. We gonna show them that women can do just the same thing that men do.”
But then she turned super serious, sharing the moment it all came into focus. “You know what the best part for me was? About a month ago, a month and a half ago, the local movie theater where I used to go as a kid and steal movies from, had two posters up. Both of them with me on them. Nobody’s Fool was way bigger and then there was Night School. Yes! I F—ing made it. Bleep that out. But yes I made it.”
And for a moment, her fun, playful mood was replaced with some genuine gratitude.
“I was so excited about that. And I was so grateful. I’m so grateful.” Then, bordering on tears, she said “And I’m hormonal too. You don’t see women have two movies side by side like that. That is huge. It’s really huge. And I’m super happy about that.”
But after that, the Tiffany we all know came back!
“I knew it would happen. I just didn’t know how it would happen. And I thought it was gonna be straight to home video situation. But these are straight to the theaters, baby. Bam! Yes!”
After all, this is the woman who asked us if we peed while watching her movie!
The Critic’s Cocktail Recommendation
Whisky Sour. There’s nothing like a little brown liquor to celebrate Tanya getting out of jail and Tiffany taking the box office by storm!
